05 — Mediation & Peacebuilding

Mediation is not only a way to settle disputes; it is a space for building trust.

Mediation is a voluntary, structured process that helps parties in conflict to dialogue, understand different perspectives, and seek solutions acceptable to all with the help of a neutral mediator.

The mediator does not impose a solution on the parties, but opens a safe space for communication, helps ease tension, and encourages the parties to reach solutions based on mutual understanding and respect.

03Preventing disputes from escalating into violence.
04Strengthening dialogue within the community.
05Addressing the effects of conflicts on relationships.
06Opening communication channels between different parties.
07Supporting restorative justice and civil peace.
Mediation tools

Practical tools a mediator uses to open dialogue and build agreement.

01
Active listening

Full attention to each party, so they feel heard and understood, and tension eases.

02
Reframing

Turning sharp statements into neutral language that surfaces needs instead of accusations.

03
Open questions

Questions that reveal what lies behind positions, opening the way to a deeper understanding of the conflict and its causes.

04
Focusing on interests

Moving from the positions parties state to the interests and needs they share.

05
Generating options

Building several alternatives with the parties before evaluating them and choosing the most suitable.

06
Private sessions

Separate meetings with each party that allow frank conversation and help move past deadlock.

With these tools, mediation moves from managing conflict to building peace and preventing violence.

Why do we need mediation?

Because conflicts are part of everyday community life, but how they are handled determines their impact. When disagreements are left unaddressed, they may expand and turn into rupture, violence, or social distancing. When managed through dialogue and mediation, they can become an opportunity for understanding, change, and more balanced relationships.

Mediation and community peace

The network sees mediation as an important entry point for strengthening community peace, especially in contexts under political, social and economic pressure.
