06 — Success Stories & Initiatives

Every success story begins with a step: a conversation, an initiative, or a brave decision to believe change is possible.

The Youth, Peace and Security Network in Palestine believes that success stories are not always major events — they may begin with a small initiative, a dialogue session, a mediation intervention, or a youth idea that opened a door to change.

In this section we share stories and initiatives from youth, women and mediators who contributed to building peace, resolving conflicts, strengthening dialogue, or supporting their communities in difficult times.

From participation to initiative
Story 01 · PalestineParticipation

From participation to initiative

A number of young people took part in trainings and meetings on youth, peace and security. They began with a deeper understanding of their role in society, then moved from discussion to thinking about practical initiatives.

The trainings helped participants realize that youth are not only beneficiaries of programs — they can be partners in choosing issues, gathering information, building coalitions, and engaging decision-makers.

This experience shows that meaningful youth participation begins when young people have a safe space, sufficient knowledge, and practical tools to turn their ideas into actionable steps.

Story 02 · JeninCommunity initiative

A smile returns to Jenin

In one of the mediators and peacebuilding network sessions, participants discussed the difficult conditions facing some areas and camps — especially learning loss and psychological pressure on children and families.

From that discussion came an initiative titled “A Smile Returns to Jenin”, aimed at supporting children and adolescents through educational, psychosocial, and recreational activities that ease psychological pressure and help recover part of the learning loss.

The initiative shows how mediation and peacebuilding can connect to people’s everyday needs — education, psychosocial support, safety, and dignity.

Story 03 · NablusCommunity initiative

Youth opening a space of hope in the neighborhood

The idea

Youth in a Nablus neighborhood felt daily tension widening the gap between generations. Instead of only complaining, they launched a small initiative for connection and shared work.

With network support, they designed a weekly space bringing young people and elders together around neighborhood needs.

Putting it into practice

It started with listening sessions, then practical activities: cleaning pathways, supporting families in need, and short dialogue circles.

Tangible results

  • Regular participation across generations
  • Less tension in shared spaces
  • Trusted local youth leadership emerging

Hope here was not a slogan — it was a weekly presence and shared work that served everyone.

After launch

The initiative became a model shared with nearby neighborhoods through network coordinators in Nablus.

Story 04 · JerusalemDialogue

A bridge between voices that once felt far apart

Context

In Jerusalem, several voices felt far apart on community security. Young women from the network chose to build a bridge through a series of facilitated meetings.

The goal was not forced quick consensus, but trust that could support later cooperation.

The meetings

The series spanned weeks, with youth, local initiatives, and civil society participants.

Dialogue outcomes

  • A shared map of neighborhood priorities
  • Direct communication channels between distant parties
  • A commitment to follow one protection issue as a first step

The bridge was not built from big slogans — it was built from regular sessions and mutual listening.

Follow-up

The team continues follow-up meetings and documents lessons for other Jerusalem contexts.

A monthly peace circle led by young women

The circle

Young women in Ramallah launched a monthly peace circle gathering women and young women from different backgrounds to discuss protection, participation, and peacebuilding.

It is a safe space first — then a platform for small, doable initiatives.

Themes

Sessions move between psychosocial protection, local participation, and field success stories.

What came out of it?

  • A listening initiative for families affected by tension
  • A small advocacy group on protection issues
  • A mutual support network among participants

Young women’s voice is not an add-on to the peace agenda — it is part of its structure.

Continuity

The circle continues with network coordinators’ support, expanding participation gradually without losing its sense of safety.

Story 06 · BethlehemDialogue

When two generations sat at one table

The challenge

In Bethlehem, young people and elders felt intergenerational dialogue had stalled in mutual blame. The network launched an intergenerational dialogue series to rebuild mutual respect.

Method

Short sessions, clear ground rules, and trained youth facilitation to keep the space equal for everyone.

Series outcomes

  • Better understanding of each generation’s concerns
  • A shared project to maintain a public space
  • A commitment to meet every two months

Local peace sometimes begins at one table that brings together people who used to pass each other without speaking.

Transfer

The team documented the method for nearby towns facing a similar generational gap.
